9/14/17 Fall Presidential Lecture Series Guest: Ndaba Mandela

August 28, 2017

TO:                  The College Community

FROM:            Dr. Shaun L. McKay, President

SUBJECT:     Fall Presidential Lecture Series Guest Announced:

Ndaba Mandela – Thursday, September 14, 2017 at 11 a.m.

I am pleased to announce the fall 2017 Presidential Lecture Series to be presented at Suffolk County Community College. This forum is meant to engage the college community in meaningful conversations that can inspire each of us to bring about positive change in our communities. It also provides the College with an opportunity to meet its mission-related strategic goal of enhancing community enrichment through increased participation in social and cultural events and activities conducted by the College or in partnership with external stakeholders.

This semester’s presentation will be delivered by Ndaba Mandela, grandson of the South African activist and former president, Nelson Mandela. Ndaba’s lecture is entitled, “From Prisoner to President: The Mandela Legacy Lives On.”  The lecture will take place on Thursday, September 14th at 11 a.m. in the Shea Theater on the Ammerman Campus in Selden; it will also be streamed to the Sagtikos Theater on the Michael J. Grant Campus and the Montaukett Learning Resource Center, Room 107/108.

In his presentation, Ndaba describes what it was like to first meet his iconic grandfather at age 11—when Nelson Mandela was finally released from prison and Ndaba lived with him in the Presidential Palace shortly thereafter. Ndaba tells tales and shares the inspiring, and often amusing, anecdotes told to him directly from his doting grandfather. Ndaba also describes to his audiences, both the joy and the strain he feels having the awesome responsibility of the world’s expectations to be counted on, and considered as, the “2nd chapter” of the Mandela story.

Tickets will be required for this event on the Ammerman Campus. If you would like to reserve space for your class, or for more information about the presentations, please contact Jill Santiago at the Center for Social Justice and Human Understanding at santiaj@sunysuffolk.edu.
