FROM:           Dr. Christopher J. Adams, Vice President for Student Affairs

SUBJECT:     New Online Career Portal- Purple Briefcase – Launched at the College

The Office of Career Services is proud to announce the availability of Purple Briefcase.  This online career platform allows employers to connect with Suffolk’s students and alumni as they search for career and internship opportunities. It also offers an extensive range of support services like career chat, videos, networking tips and other tools to help students and alumni that are engaged in the job search process. In alignment with Institutional Goal #1-Student Success, this is an advanced career networking and planning tool that will support individuals in finding a great position that will further develop their skills and work experience.

Purple Briefcase will be an important resource for information about career-related events and career exploration tools. Students will be able to develop individual profiles focused on their interests, skills, and career aspirations. The profile will also serve as their online resume for potential employers. Most importantly, Purple Briefcase is the main platform that the College will now use to post internships, job opportunities, and other important career information. We encourage everyone to visit the new site and learn more at www.sunysuffolk.edu/purplebriefcase.

For further information on how you may use this program and integrate this tool as part of your courses with our students, please do not hesitate to contact Tania Velazquez ’96, College Director for Career Services, at velazqt@sunysuffolk.edu.

Spring 2018 Excelsior Scholarship – Another Opportunity at Tuition-free College Deadline 12/4/17

2 girls behind a laptop looking forward, with NY State Excelsior Ever Upward logo

The benefits of a college degree are well known. Those who only carry a high school diploma are falling further behind than ever before. Throughout the nation different law makers are trying to find solutions for the rising cost of a college degree in order to give more students the opportunity to pursue a college degree and better their lives. New York is leading this charge after introducing the Excelsior Scholarship this past spring, and it is continuing forward.

If you missed your chance to apply for the scholarship this past spring, fear not. The Excelsior Scholarship application for the spring 2018 semester is now open as of Monday, October 30 at 9:00am, and will run through December 4. The spring 2018 application is open to students first entering college in the spring 2018 term, students who caught up on credits during the fall 2017 term to meet the credit requirement, and current college students who missed the deadline for the fall 2017 application. Simply visit hesc.ny.gov/excelsior to submit your application.

The Excelsior Scholarship will cover up to $5,500 in tuition after all other awards are factored in, like Pell Grants, TAP, and others. As it was during the first cycle, students must be enrolled in at least 12 credits per term and complete at least 30 credits each year (continuously) that are applicable toward their degree program. In addition to the in school performance, awardees must reside in New York State after graduation for however long they receive the award, and, if employed during such time, be employed in New York. The full list of requirements are found on hesc.ny.gov/excelsior.

The numbers behind the program show success from the onset. After the first round of applications this spring, nearly 22,000 students are now attending college at a SUNY or CUNY school tuition-free. That number brings the total portion of tuition-free students to nearly 53% of the total in New York State.

Access to college is expanding and New York has taken the lead in trying to help students remove one of the key hurdles they face in attending college. Both higher education institutions and politicians in New York are working together to make the Excelsior Scholarship the best it can be moving forward.

Apply to the Excelsior Scholarship for Spring 2018.

In our continuing efforts to provide online services to students and alumni, the Office of the College Registrar has partnered with Credentials Solutions to offer electronic services for official transcripts. This method of delivery will expedite official transcript ordering, and will enhance the level of service that the Registrar’s Office currently provides.

Through this partnership, the College has been able to streamline the entire official transcript process. Many institutions across the country and abroad use e-transcript functionality, and now our students—current and former—will be able to enjoy what has proven to be an efficient and secure approach to requesting the transmission of official copies of their college transcript. This process will also facilitate student mobility and have a positive effect on students’ college transfer processes and employment pursuits.

This service is now in effect and operational.  Additional information can be found at: www.sunysuffolk.edu/officialtranscript or you may email: central_records@sunysuffolk.edu.

Suffolk Culinary Students Partner With Community Action Southold Town, Prepare Thanksgiving Dinners for East End Families

Thanksgiving Cooking

Suffolk County Community College’s Culinary Arts program students will prepare about 200 dinners for Community Action Southold Town’s (CAST) Greenport food pantry in what has become an annual and happy undertaking for the college’s culinary program and its students.

This is the first year Suffolk’s Culinary program has worked with CAST, a not-for-profit that has worked in Southold Town since 1965  to help low-income residents meet basic needs in the areas of nutrition, employment, energy, and education. CAST exists as a safety net for Southold Town families from Laurel to Orient Point, including Fisher’s Island. The majority of CAST’s funding comes from the generosity of the community.

This marks the ninth year Suffolk County Community College students and faculty have happily volunteered their culinary expertise to support the holiday cooking.

The dinner preparation will take place on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 beginning at 8 a.m. at the Suffolk County Community College Culinary Arts & Hospitality Center, 20 East Main St., Riverhead, NY 11901. Cooking and packaging the meals will run through to 12 noon.

“We celebrate Thanksgiving by cooking and sharing our favorite foods, being with the ones we love and giving thanks for all that we have. Our college and students, faculty and staff enjoy giving back to our community,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay.

About 40 students and faculty chefs from the college’s culinary program will prepare the meal whose ingredients are provided by CAST —  more than 20 turkeys; 100 pounds of mashed potatoes; 50 pounds of sweet potatoes; 80 pounds of stuffing; 25 pounds of assorted vegetables and 20 each of apple and pumpkin pies. And, of course, gravy – more than 5 gallons of it!

The Clinton Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, 614 Third Street, Greenport is working in collaboration with CAST for people who want to gather and eat their hot turkey dinner in fellowship with their neighbors or pick up a meal to take home. The church will distribute meals on Wednesday Nov 22 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
