Eastern Campus to Host American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk – Sunday, October 23, 2016

Strides Sccc 2016-7-22

Suffolk County Community College, the Suffolk Community College Foundation and the American Cancer Society are working together to bring breast cancer awareness to the Long Island community.  On Sunday, October 23, 2016 the Eastern Campus will be hosting the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk.  Approximately 4,000 individuals will walk around “Ring Road” and unite as a community to raise awareness about the steps you can take to reduce the risk of getting breast cancer.

Additionally, we are happy to announce that through this partnership the Foundation has created the first endowed “Breast Cancer Survivor’s and Caregiver’s Scholarship.” This scholarship will be awarded to a Suffolk student who is a survivor or has been a caregiver to someone impacted by breast cancer.

When communities participate in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks they are helping those currently fighting the disease, those who may have to fight it one day, and those who will avoid a diagnosis due to education and risk reduction.  When it comes to breast cancer, no one should walk alone.  We encourage our college community members to form a team, join a team, walk as an individual or bring a friend to the Eastern Campus. For more information or details about registering please contact Russell Malbrough at 631-451-4630.

Together we can make a difference in our community.

Who is ready for the Big Milestone: Suffolk Nursing’s 50th Pinning Friday May 15!

Suffolk Nursing, NY State’s Largest Program, Prepares For Milestone Celebration

SON 50 PinHonoring nurses who served in the military, the gathering of oral histories and displays of retrospective memorabilia are all part of Suffolk County Community College’s School of Nursing’s plans for a celebration culminating with the school’s 50th pinning ceremony on May 15.

The School of Nursing program boasts more than 7,100 alumni, is the largest program in New York State and the sixth largest in the nation.

“We are very proud to graduate nursing professionals who have worked in our communities for a half century,” said College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. “One of our College’s highly competitive programs and the largest in the state, our nursing program’s excellence is directly attributable to our faculty, staff, and students who are committed to nursing education. We are also very proud that a majority of our nursing graduates remain right here in our region where they serve with pride and distinction.”

“Our nursing student body is diverse and highly motivated,” said College Associate Dean, School of Nursing Dr. Cheryl Shaffer, “they graduate as nursing leaders committed to helping individuals, families and communities.”

“The 50th pinning ceremony and events leading up to this May’s event will provide an excellent opportunity for the thousands of alumni who graduated from our School of Nursing to reconnect with their friends, former professors and college community,” said Dr. Sylvia A. Diaz, Executive Director of the Suffolk Community College Foundation.

Partnerships with top hospitals, long-term care and community agencies in Suffolk County provide students with outstanding clinical experiences.

Clinical sites include St. Charles Hospital and Rehabilitation Center and John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson; Peconic Bay Medical Center, Riverhead; Stony Brook University Hospital; Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, West Islip; Southside Hospital-North Shore LIJ, Bay Shore; St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center, Smithtown; Huntington Hospital-North Shore LIJ, Huntington; Eastern Long Island Hospital, Greenport; and the Pilgrim Psychiatric Center in West Brentwood.
